En fechas del 20 al 23 de marzo nuestro centro ha estado compartiendo dos mañanas con alumnos de un colegio de Newcastle (Inglaterra). Las actividades, en las que participaron alumnos de 4ºB y 4ºC de ESO, estaban encaminadas a que los alumnos de ambos centros compartieran experiencias y estrecharan lazos de amistad usando los idiomas español e inglés. Nuestros estudiantes, ayudados por sus tutores Jesús Alegre y Paz López y Concha Ainciburu, su profesora de Ética, prepararon temas que ellos consideraban interesantes para un adolescente de otro país (música, cine, comidas típicas), deportes, etc. además de temas de cultura e historia de Madrid y de España en general. Algunos se expusieron en inglés y otros en español.
VISIT OF NEWCASTLE SCHOOL FOR BOYS TO PÍO BAROJA
On the mornings of the 20th and the 23rd of March our centre played host to a group of students from a school in Newcastle, England. Alongside students from classes 4º B and 4º C, they participated in a variety of activities aimed at encouraging kids from both schools to share their experiences and form new friendships, communicating in both Spanish and English. With the help of form tutors and teachers, our students prepared presentations on topics they thought would be interesting to foreign teenagers (including music, cinema, local cuisine and sport) and also on cultural and historical issues related to Madrid and to Spain generally. Some students presented their topics in English and others in Spanish.
Los alumnos de Newcastle, acompañados de dos profesores, hicieron algo parecido con temas de cultura y actualidad del mundo anglo-sajón.
Accompanied by their two teachers, the students from Newcastle gave presentations, similar those of our students, about culture and modern life in the Anglo-Saxon world.
Después de la exposición de temas hicimos una actividad de Speed-Dating, muy entretenida y que favoreció que los chavales se conocieran en un plano más informal. Esto fue lo que más gustó a los alumnos. Anosotros sus profesores lo que nos gustó fue comprobar que la conversación fluía en ambos idioma sin problema. Tanto fue así, que no oyeron el timbre del recreo.
In the following activity, the kids took part in an immensely entertaining game of speed dating, enabling them to get to know each other in a less formal setting. For the students this was the most enjoyable part of the day, while us teachers delighted in watching how fluidly the students were able to communicate in both languages…so much so that they failed to notice the bell sounding for the start of break!
Ambas mañanas acabaron con una clase magistral por parte de profesores del centro: Gertrudis López, profesora de Lengua, trató el tema de las frases coloquiales en el español actual, y Marga Fernández, profesora de Sociales, nos deleitó con un paseo por la historia de Madrid a través de sus edificios, acabando con la descripción del Guernica de Picasso.
Both mornings concluded with a taster class run by teachers from our centre: Gertrudis López, a Spanish language teacher, dissected amusing colloquial phrases used in contemporary Spanish, while MargaFernández, a social studies teacher, delighted us with a stroll through Madrid’s history by route of it’s most famous buildings, ending with a description of Picasso’s Guernica.
Para que los alumnos de Newcastle pudieran seguir las clases de las profesoras, contamos con la asistencia de Grace, una de las lectoras de inglés con la que contamos este año en el centro, que hizo las veces de traductora.
In order that the Newcastle students were able to follow these classes, one of our English language assistants, Grace, acted in the role of translator.
Todos los participantes, profesores y alumnos de aquí y allá, hemos encontrado la actividad muy enriquecedora. Desde el Departamento de Inglés queremos felicitar a los alumnos por el interés demostrado y por la altura de los trabajos expuestos. También nuestra felicitación a los profesores de otros departamentos que nos han ayudado, ya que sin la ayuda de todos estas jornadas no habrían sido posibles.
All of those involved in the exchange, both teachers and students from here and from Newcastle, were integral to its success. The English department would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the students for their enthusiasm and for the outstanding quality of their presentations, and to thank the teachers from other departments, without whom these days would not have been possible.
Nuestro deseo es poder seguir realizando actividades conjuntas con el Newcastle School for Boys en años venideros y esperamos poder aceptar su invitación e ir a visitarlos pronto. En actividades como ésta es cuando queda patente el potencial humano que tenemos en el Pío Baroja, tanto alumnos como profesores, dados el entusiasmo y dedicación mostrados por unos y otros, además del nivel de las presentaciones. Todo esto es lo que nos anima a seguir trabajando día tras día recordando a los más pequeños que en unos años ellos tendrán que tomar el estrado y representarnos igual de bien, como hoy lo hacen sus compañeros de 4º ESO.
It is our hope to be able to continue carrying out joint activities with Newcastle School for Boys during the years to come and we look forward to accepting their invitation to visit them soon. It is during activities such as these, when we see the level of passion and dedication as demonstrated this past week, that it becomes apparent the enormous potential that we have here at Pío Baroja, both as students and as teachers. It is this that encourages us to work day after day, remembering that the youngest among us will one day have to take to the stage and represent us as well as have done their schoolmates of 4? ESO.
